F1 predictions 2026: how the drivers' title is scored, what the constructors' championship is worth, and titles decided at the final race

Formula 1 is the premier class of international single-seater motor racing, governed by rules established by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and contested by ten teams entering two cars each. A season consists of a series of Grands Prix held globally, culminating in two distinct titles: the Drivers' World Championship and the Constructors' World Championship.

Three core factors govern how a Formula 1 season is decided: the FIA points scale and tiebreaker procedures for drivers, the financial payouts and wind tunnel restrictions that depend on constructor finishes, and the statistical likelihood of a championship battle lasting until the final race.

How is the F1 Drivers' Championship decided, and how are points scored?

The F1 Drivers' Championship is decided on cumulative points, awarded to the driver with the highest total once the final scheduled race of the season is certified as official. Under the FIA General Regulatory Provisions, a full-distance Grand Prix awards championship points to the top ten finishers: 25 points to the winner, 18 for second place, 15 for third, 12 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 8 for sixth, 6 for seventh, 4 for eighth, 2 for ninth, and a single point for tenth place. Points are awarded exclusively for official races completed during the championship calendar.

Shortened races pay reduced points across four tiers based on distance completed, with a two-lap minimum required for any points to be awarded. Selected sprint events award points to the top eight finishers (8 down to 1), provided the sprint reaches at least half distance. F1 rules no longer award a bonus point for the fastest lap.

Ties in the final standings are resolved using a countback system rather than shared positions. The driver with more race victories takes the higher placement. If drivers remain tied on wins, the countback evaluates second-place finishes, third-place finishes, and subsequent results until a difference emerges. If a tie persists across all race results, qualifying performance across the season breaks the tie.

What is the Constructors' Championship, and why does it matter to teams?

The Constructors' Championship combines points scored by a team's two cars, tracking the entrant rather than its engine supplier. These standings directly dictate commercial payouts from Liberty Media's central prize fund, which pays teams primarily based on their prior-season finishing position alongside select heritage bonuses.

Standings also govern future development capacity. Under FIA rules, wind tunnel and CFD simulation time scales inversely to championship position, giving the top team 70 percent of baseline testing and scaling up in 5-point increments to 115 percent for tenth place. Limits update mid-season based on active standings.

How often does the F1 title go to the final race?

The Drivers' Championship went down to the final race in nine of the twenty seasons between 2006 and 2025, occurring in just under half of those campaigns. According to official FIA results archives, those final-race deciders occurred in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2021, and 2025.

These close title fights have occurred in clusters rather than at regular intervals. Seven of the nine final-round deciders took place between 2006 and 2016, whereas only one occurred during the eight seasons from 2017 through 2024. However, with two of the five seasons leading into 2026 reaching the final race, recent history demonstrates that championship drama frequently extends to the finale.

The closest finales produced historic margins. In 2021, both title contenders entered the Abu Dhabi finale tied on exactly 369.5 points. In 2008, the championship was decided by a single point in Brazil, where the runner-up had accumulated more wins over the season. In 2014, a 17-point margin remained open heading into the final round due to a temporary rule awarding double points for the season finale.

Champions, clinching rounds and regulation eras.

  • 2006: Fernando Alonso secured the drivers' title at the final round in Brazil, finishing ten points clear with ten points available.
  • 2008: Lewis Hamilton won the championship by one point at the final round in Brazil, despite recording five wins to Felipe Massa's six.
  • 2009: Major aerodynamic rule changes reduced downforce, reintroduced slick tires after eleven years, and introduced kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS).
  • 2010: Formula 1 adopted the modern 25-to-1 points scale for the top ten finishers, culminating in a four-way title decider at the Abu Dhabi finale.
  • 2014: The sport introduced 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 hybrid power units, with the championship extending to a double-points finale.
  • 2021: The operational cost cap took effect, and the drivers' title reached the Abu Dhabi finale with both contenders tied at 369.5 points.
  • Jul 2021: Sprint qualifying races debuted at the British Grand Prix following formal approval by the F1 Commission.
  • 2022: Ground-effect aerodynamic regulations took effect to encourage closer racing.
  • Aug 2022: The World Motor Sport Council approved 2026 power unit regulations, increasing electrical power output to 50 percent on fully sustainable fuels.
  • 2023: Max Verstappen secured his third drivers' title during a sprint race in Qatar.
  • Jun 2024: The FIA unveiled full 2026 chassis regulations featuring active aerodynamics with movable front and rear wings.
  • Oct 2024: The World Motor Sport Council voted to abolish the bonus point for fastest lap starting in the 2025 season.
  • 2025: Lando Norris won the drivers' title at the Abu Dhabi finale in a three-way battle.

Frequently asked questions.

How do F1 regulation changes reshuffle the grid?

Major technical regulation shifts reset the engineering baseline for every team, allowing lower-ranked teams to overcome established car design advantages. The FIA enforces competitive balance through sliding-scale development limits, granting less wind tunnel and simulation time to higher-finishing teams while giving more testing capacity to lower-placed constructors.

Can a driver win the championship with fewer race wins than a rival?

Yes. The points system rewards consistent top finishes rather than victories alone, allowing a driver who regularly finishes second to accumulate more total points than a driver who wins more races but suffers frequent retirements. For example, Lewis Hamilton won the 2008 title with five wins compared to Felipe Massa's six. Race wins serve as a tiebreaker only when drivers finish level on total points.

What happens if a Grand Prix is cancelled or cut short?

If a race is cancelled, it is removed from the calendar and no points are awarded, as championship standings reflect only completed events. Shortened races award reduced points on a four-tiered scale based on completed distance, provided the leader completes at least two consecutive laps without a safety car. Full points require completing at least 75 percent of scheduled distance.

How many races are in an F1 season?

FIA regulations cap a season at a maximum of 24 rounds and require a minimum of eight rounds to constitute an official championship. The official calendar is published by the FIA prior to January 1 of each year. Rules also limit the grid to a maximum of 24 cars, entered by up to twelve two-car teams.
