MLB predictions 2026: the best record in October, the MVP and Cy Young vote, and rookie eligibility
Updated · 8 min read

Major League Baseball features 30 teams split evenly between the American and National Leagues, each playing a 162-game regular season.
The regular season determines which clubs reach the postseason and how they are seeded. The postseason culminates in the World Series, a best-of-seven series between the two league champions. The 2026 League Championship Series pair the top two seeds in each league: the Milwaukee Brewers against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League and the Tampa Bay Rays against the Cleveland Guardians in the American League, with World Series Game 1 set for October 23. Beyond the World Series, the league's collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1, 2026, which sets the deadline for a new labor deal ahead of the 2027 season.
How often does the best regular-season team win the World Series?
The club with the best regular-season record in Major League Baseball has won the World Series once in the four seasons since the twelve-team playoff bracket was introduced. That single winner was the 2024 Los Angeles Dodgers, who finished 98-64. In the other three seasons, the regular-season leaders were the 2022 Dodgers at 111-51, the 2023 Atlanta Braves at 104-58, and the 2025 Milwaukee Brewers at 97-65, while the World Series titles were claimed by clubs that finished 106-56, 90-72, and 93-69.
The structure of the playoff bracket explains this pattern. Six clubs qualify per league (three division winners and three wild cards), with the top two seeds receiving first-round byes into the Division Series while the third seed plays the sixth and the fourth plays the fifth in a best-of-three Wild Card Series. Because the bracket does not reseed after the wild-card round, the top seed always meets the winner of the fourth-versus-fifth series.
Finishing with the top record provides rest, home-field advantage, and a shorter playoff path, but it does not guarantee a shorter series. A team with a first-round bye must still win a best-of-five series and two subsequent rounds against opponents that have already built postseason momentum. Short playoff series naturally narrow the performance gap between a 97-win club and an 87-win club. Home-field advantage in the World Series goes to the pennant winner with the superior regular-season record, regardless of its original league seed.
Who votes for the MVP and Cy Young, and when are they announced?
The Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) votes for the Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards, alongside the Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year honors. Two writers from each major league city are recommended by their local chapter chairman and approved nationally, creating a panel of 30 voters for each award in each league. The total voter count directly mirrors the number of franchises in each league.
Voting relies on weighted ranked-choice ballots to aggregate individual opinions into a final winner. An MVP ballot ranks ten players, awarding 14 points for first place, followed by 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 points down through tenth place. A Cy Young ballot ranks five pitchers, weighted at 7, 4, 3, 2, and 1 points. Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year ballots rank three candidates, weighted at 5, 3, and 1 points.
BBWAA members submit their ballots before the postseason begins, meaning voting takes only regular-season performance into consideration. Performance during the October playoffs cannot alter an award outcome. Winners are announced on four consecutive nights in November, progressing in order from Rookie of the Year to Manager of the Year, Cy Young, and Most Valuable Player. The BBWAA publishes full individual ballots and voting breakdowns publicly following the announcements.
How is Rookie of the Year decided, and who counts as a rookie?
The Rookie of the Year award is selected by the BBWAA using a three-player ballot weighted at 5, 3, and 1 points. Named in honor of Jackie Robinson, the award follows specific service-time rules to determine candidate eligibility rather than relying on player age or draft year.
Major League Baseball defines a player as a rookie unless he has exceeded specific major league service thresholds in a prior season. A player loses rookie status once he accumulates 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the major leagues, or reaches 45 total days on an active major league roster during the 172-day championship season, excluding time spent on the injured list. Crossing any one of these thresholds permanently terminates rookie eligibility.
The at-bat and innings limits allow a prospect to be called up late in the season and still maintain rookie eligibility for the following year. Conversely, the 45-day active roster rule counts total calendar days on the roster rather than games played, meaning an extended stint on the bench can exhaust a player's rookie status with minimal on-field appearances.

Frequently asked questions.
How does the MLB postseason work, and how many teams make it?
Twelve teams qualify for the postseason, six from the American League and six from the National League. The three division winners and three wild-card teams with the best records in each league make the field. The top two division winners in each league earn a first-round bye to the Division Series, while the third seed hosts the sixth seed and the fourth seed hosts the fifth seed in a best-of-three Wild Card Series.
Can a wild card team win the World Series?
Yes. Multiple wild-card teams have won the World Series, beginning with the 1997 Florida Marlins. The 2002 Anaheim Angels defeated the San Francisco Giants in the first World Series between two wild-card clubs, and the 2023 Texas Rangers won the title as a wild card after losing their division on a regular-season tiebreaker.
What is the ABS challenge system, and how does it work?
The Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge system allows teams to challenge an umpire's ball or strike call. Only the batter, catcher, or pitcher may initiate a challenge immediately following a pitch call. Each club receives two challenges per game and retains its challenge whenever a call is overturned. If a team enters extra innings with zero challenges, it receives one additional challenge.
Does postseason performance count toward the MVP or Cy Young?
No. BBWAA members cast their ballots before the postseason begins, evaluating regular-season statistics exclusively. Strong postseason performances do not influence award voting. Winners are announced in November after the World Series concludes.
Are award ballots made public?
Yes. The Baseball Writers' Association of America has published complete voting results publicly since 2012. Individual voting records detailing how every writer voted in each award category are published on the association's official website following the announcement broadcasts.
Who gets home-field advantage in the World Series?
Home-field advantage in the World Series goes to the league champion with the better regular-season winning percentage, regardless of playoff seeding within its own league. If both pennant winners finish with identical regular-season records, head-to-head results serve as the primary tiebreaker.
