Awards season predictions 2027: Oscar voting, the precursor awards, and the ceremony calendar

Awards season spans six months, beginning with the Emmy Awards in September and concluding with the Academy Awards the following March. Four primary governing organizations manage these honors: the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) presents the Oscars, the Television Academy presents the Emmys, the Recording Academy presents the Grammys, and video game achievements are honored at The Game Awards. Each organization publishes its own official rulebook, eligibility window, and voting calendar to govern its selection process.

Understanding how winners are chosen requires analyzing the distinct stages of voting. Major industry awards utilize a two-round system consisting of a nomination phase to establish a candidate shortlist, followed by a final voting round to determine the winner. Voting eligibility shifts between rounds: the Academy restricts nomination voting in craft categories to peer branches before opening final ballots to its full global membership, whereas the Television Academy maintains peer-group evaluation across both rounds.

How are Oscar winners chosen, and who votes?

Oscar winners are chosen by active and life voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as governed by the official 99th Oscars rulebook. In the final round, all eligible Academy members are entitled to vote across all 24 award categories. However, the initial nomination round is far more restricted, meaning nomination ballots and final winner ballots reflect different voting pools.

Best Picture is tabulated using a preferential instant-runoff system, making it distinct from every other category. Voting members rank nominated films in order of preference, and a film must secure more than 50 percent of the vote to win. If no film reaches that threshold on the first count, the film with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, and its ballots are redistributed to each voter's next choices until a winner emerges. Every other category uses a simple plurality vote, where the nominee receiving the highest number of first-place votes wins outright.

This counting distinction explains why a widely admired film can capture Best Picture while a more polarizing film wins Best Director on the same night. To maintain voting integrity, Academy rules require members to verify they have watched every nominated film in a category before submitting a final ballot in that category.

How well do the precursor awards predict Best Picture?

Industry guild awards predict the Best Picture winner effectively, though they are not entirely definitive indicators. Across sixteen film years from 2010 through 2025, the top feature film winner at the dga.org ceremonies went on to win Best Picture ten times, while the ensemble winner at actorawards.org matched the Best Picture winner eight times. These historical match rates are compiled directly from official guild announcement records and Academy historical archives.

Guild directors show an even stronger correlation with the Academy's directing category than with Best Picture. Over that same sixteen-year span, the Directors Guild of America winner went on to win the Oscar for Best Director fourteen times. Consequently, instances where the DGA winner missed Best Picture typically occurred in years when the Academy split its top two honors rather than years when it disagreed with the guild on directing achievement.

The Producers Guild of America plays an explicit structural role in the Oscar process. Academy eligibility rules require a film producer to be officially vetted and cleared by the Producers Guild of America, or to win an official appeal, before being listed as an eligible nominee for Best Picture.

How are Oscar nominations decided, and how many films can be nominated?

Oscar nominations are determined branch by branch across creative disciplines, with one major exception. Each specialized Academy branch nominates candidates within its own field (directors nominate directors, and cinematographers nominate cinematographers), while Best Picture is the sole category in which all Academy branches participate. Nomination ballots are tabulated using a reweighted preferential voting system rather than a simple count of first-choice votes.

Exactly ten films are nominated for Best Picture, a fixed total established by the Academy to ensure broad representation. Every other category is capped at five nominees. The fixed ten-nominee standard was permanently instituted starting with the 94th Academy Awards, replacing an earlier rule that allowed a floating number between five and ten. Members rank up to ten titles during nomination voting, and the ten highest-finishing films secure spots on the official ballot.

When are the Oscars, Emmys and Grammys, and when do nominations come out?

The annual awards calendar begins with television honors in the fall and concludes with film honors in late winter. According to the 78th Emmy date announcement, the 78th Emmy Awards aired on Monday, September 14, 2026, following the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies on September 5 and 6, with official nominations revealed on July 8. The 69th Grammy date release confirms that the 69th Grammy Awards will take place on Sunday, February 7, 2027, at Crypto.com Arena, with nominations announced on November 16, 2026.

The Academy outlines its full operating timeline in its official 99th key-dates press release. Nomination voting for the 99th Academy Awards runs from January 11 to January 15, 2027, with official nominations announced on January 21. Final voting takes place between February 25 and March 4, culminating in the live ceremony on Sunday, March 14, 2027. The Academy notes that all scheduled dates remain subject to adjustment.

Key precursor ceremonies take place during the voting window. Golden Globes coverage at goldenglobes.com confirms its ceremony for January 10, 2027, following nominations on December 7, 2026. The Directors Guild Awards take place on January 30, 2027, and the Actor Awards are held on February 28, 2027, ensuring all major precursor honors are awarded before Oscar final voting concludes.

Frequently asked questions.

How do the Emmys pick winners, and why do some shows sweep?

Emmy winners are determined by a plurality vote within each specific peer group, meaning the nominee with the most votes wins. There is no ranked-choice ballot for main category races. Sweeps occur because the Television Academy awards dozens of individual achievement categories across separate ceremonies, granting an official statuette to every credited winner on a high-performing production.

How is the Grammy for Best New Artist decided, and who is eligible?

Voting members of the Recording Academy select the Best New Artist winner from a field of eight nominees. Initial eligibility is established by a screening committee: an artist must have released at least five singles or one full album during the eligibility period, may enter no more than four times, and is disqualified if the committee determines their commercial breakthrough occurred in a prior year.

What is the difference between a nominees market and a winner market?

A nominees market tracks whether a film, show, or individual secures a spot on the official shortlist announced on nomination day. A winner market evaluates who takes home the trophy on ceremony night. Because nomination lists are finalized months before final voting closes, a candidate excluded from the nomination announcement is immediately eliminated from winner contention.

Why does Best Picture use a different ballot from every other Oscar?

Best Picture is the only category calculated using an instant-runoff preferential ballot. Academy members rank candidates in order of preference, requiring the winner to clear 50 percent of the vote through redistribution rounds. Other categories use standard plurality voting, which allows the two counting systems to yield different winners on the same night.

Do Academy members have to watch the nominated films?

Yes, for final voting. Official Academy regulations require members to attest that they have viewed every nominated film in a category before casting a final ballot in that category. This mandatory viewing rule applies strictly to the final round that determines winners, rather than the initial nomination round.
