Esports predictions 2026: Worlds qualification, the Counter-Strike Majors, and match settlement

Competitive esports encompasses several distinct titles, each governed by its own publisher, competitive circuit structure, and annual tournament calendar. The landscape spans multiple genres, primarily multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs) like League of Legends and Dota 2, alongside tactical first-person shooters such as Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant.

Circuit architecture divides the category between closed leagues and open invitationals. Riot Games operates structured regional leagues for League of Legends and Valorant that feed directly into annual world championships. Valve relies instead on regional standing systems and point thresholds to invite 32 teams to its Counter-Strike Majors and determine qualification for Dota 2's The International.

How does the League of Legends World Championship work, and who qualifies?

The League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) is reached through six regional leagues rather than open qualification brackets. According to Riot's tournament primer, the competition consists of three main phases: the Play-In Stage, the Swiss Stage, and the Knockout Stage. Qualifying teams emerge from the LCK (Korea), LPL (China), LEC (EMEA), LCS (North America), LCP (Asia-Pacific), and CBLOL (Brazil).

The Swiss Stage filters the core tournament field. As outlined in Riot's format explainer, sixteen teams compete across up to five rounds against opponents with identical win-loss records, continuing until a team reaches three wins to advance or three losses to be eliminated. Qualification and elimination matches are played as best-of-three series, while intermediate matches are best-of-one. The eight surviving teams advance to a single-elimination, best-of-five Knockout Stage bracket.

Regional qualification routes vary by league. Riot's MSI and Worlds update sets 19 slots for 2026: three each from the LCK, LPL, LEC, LCS and LCP, two from the CBLOL, one for the MSI champion and one for the region that finished second at MSI. Worlds 2026 runs from October 15 to November 14, opening in Los Angeles, moving to Allen, Texas for the Swiss Stage and knockouts, and closing with the final at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

How does the Counter-Strike Major circuit work, and how do teams qualify?

A Counter-Strike Major is a 32-team global championship operated under strict publisher rules, with entry earned through official regional standing lists rather than open qualification tournaments. Under Valve's Major supplemental rulebook, the 32-team tournament features three consecutive 16-team Swiss stages, culminating in an eight-team, single-elimination playoff bracket.

The Swiss format uses identical advancement thresholds to Worlds, with one structural addition. Teams with identical win-loss records meet in each round, where three wins secure advancement and three losses result in elimination. Decisive advancement and elimination matches are played as best-of-three series. For tiebreakers between teams with identical records, Valve applies a Buchholz Difficulty Score that calculates the combined win-loss differential of all previous opponents faced.

Qualification is determined by the official Valve Regional Standings, a published ranking model tracking performance across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Invitations are distributed across the three Swiss stages based on regional performance at prior Majors, ensuring global representation while rewarding competitive regional depth.

How do esports match markets settle when a match is postponed, forfeited or replayed?

Official esports match outcomes are governed strictly by the final ruling published by the tournament organizer. When schedule disruptions occur, official sporting rules define how postponements, forfeits, and match remakes affect official series results.

If a team forfeits a match after play has officially commenced, or is disqualified by tournament officials for technical or disciplinary infractions, the non-offending team is designated as the official winner by the tournament organizer. In cases where a specific game or map is remade due to technical bugs or server outages, only stats and outcomes recorded in the officially counted replay are recognized on the final match report.

For postponed matches, official standings reflect the revised match completion time once tournament organizers finish the series. If a match is cancelled entirely before play begins, no official result is recorded, and standings remain unaffected.

Frequently asked questions.

How often does the LCK win Worlds?

Teams from Korea's LCK have won five of the six most recent League of Legends World Championships: DAMWON Gaming in 2020, DRX in 2022, and T1 in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The sole exception during this span occurred in 2021, when China's LPL representative, EDward Gaming, defeated DWG KIA in the grand final.

How does Dota 2's The International work, and how is its prize pool funded?

The International features sixteen qualified teams competing in a initial Swiss-system stage to seed a double-elimination playoff bracket. All main bracket matches are best-of-three series, culminating in a best-of-five grand final. Following the retirement of the Battle Pass in 2023, Valve funds the prize pool by allocating 30 percent of all in-game supporter bundle sales directly to the tournament pool.

How are the Esports Awards decided?

Finalists are selected by an industry panel, with most category winners determined through a weighted voting structure combining a 75 percent panel vote with a 25 percent public vote. Popular categories like Streamer of the Year and Esports Personality of the Year are decided entirely by public vote, whereas honor awards like Lifetime Achievement are selected exclusively by the panel.

What is a Swiss stage, and why do Worlds and the Majors both use one?

A Swiss stage pairs teams with identical win-loss records in each round rather than utilizing fixed round-robin groups. Both Riot Games and Valve use a three-win advancement and three-loss elimination threshold, ensuring every team faces opponents at an equivalent performance level throughout the stage.

Which esports markets settle the same day, and which run for months?

Single-match outcomes resolve on the same day within hours of official match completion across Counter-Strike, League of Legends, Dota 2, and Valorant. Long-term outcomes, such as regional league champions, world championship qualifiers, and year-end award winners, remain open for several months until official season conclusions.
